The rainy season is
here! From the scorching heat of summer, we welcome the bliss of the cool rain.
Aside from the change in weather, there are also several changes that we have
to expect with our health. As we welcome the coolness of rain, we also welcome
the different health problems the rainy season brings.
As a health care
provider, I feel compelled to share a few things (most of which, I’m sure you've heard already but I still want to re-iterate its importance) on how to
safeguard our health during this season.
In the Philippines,
the number 1 problem that we have during the height of monsoon rains is flooded
streets. Due to the unfortunate reality that our sewers are always clogged with
trash, flood water isn't all hygienic. The effect of flood water is not only
with our livelihood. In reality, it is our health that should be our foremost
concern. We get all kinds of diseases from flood water (these diseases will be
discussed in another post). So what are we going to do?
- Take
vitamins. Increase your body’s resistance against common illnesses brought
about by the rainy season such as colds. Load your body up with Vitamins C
and E. There’s no need to expound on why do we need to take Vitamin C. As
for Vitamin E, it is known to reduce the harsh symptoms and effects of
colds to our bodies. It has something to do with its anti-oxidant
properties I believe.
- Eat
up. There’s no better way of combating illnesses through eating a lot and
eating healthy. Nothing beats a HEALTHY BALANCED DIET in combating illness.
In addition, having a bowl of vegetable soup is helpful not only in
regulating your body temperature during the cold season but it also
contain lots of nutrients to boost the immune system.
- Drink
Up. Being well-hydrated during the rainy season means your body is
equipped in fighting colds and flu. Also, water gets rid of toxins from
our bodies.
- Wash
up. Take a hot shower after being in the rain. This is not a myth. Being
under the rain for quite some time causes a significant drop in body
temperature. Taking a shower helps the body stabilize your core
temperature.
- Do
away with stagnant water. During monsoon rains, water fills every possible
water receptacle-flower pots, water coolers, water bottles, trash cans
etc. Stagnant water is a good breeding ground for bacteria and mosquitoes
that cause Dengue.
- Cover
up. It’s time to bring out those water-resistant gears that you have.
Don’t forget to bring an umbrella when you go out. The weather is
unpredictable. Better safe than sorry.
There you go. A couple
of tips to tide us over the rainy season.
